4 in a Bar is Ireland's leading barbershop quartet, being the current IABS National Champion Quartet of Ireland for the third time now (2008/2009/2011) We have also represented Ireland at European level competitions too (Eindhoven, 2009), the only Irish group to do so for many years.
In recent years, we have been involved in a wide variety of high-profile activities, including performing for the President of Ireland at Aras an Uachtarain, Dublin, national and international TV coverage in commercials (companies like Meteor, Wimax internet, etc), jingle recordings for RTE and other radio stations, international competitions and festival performances and we even had a 'brush' with the TV phenomenon X-Factor...
Besides festival performances, corporate events, weddings and parties, we also like to present our singing discipline in an educational capacity, visiting classrooms and encouraging our country's schools and young people to get involved in the cost-free, healthy activity of ensemble singing, in keeping with the principles of the BHS.
For any school or choir interested in this, please email us for details on our workshop format and costs. Bursaries and grants are available from both the Arts Council and the Irish Association of Barbershop Singing (IABS), with a form for download here.
We are proud to be sponsored by the Helix Arts Centre, a state-of-the art convention and performance facility in north Dublin city where we rehearse and perform, and our outfits are sponsored by T.M. Lewin
Ciaran Kelly:
Ciaran (lead) hails from Derry, and has been singing all his life, starting at St Eugene's Cathedral in Derry. He is a graduate of The Royal Irish Academy of Music and currently a Lay Vicar Choral at St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. He has toured the world with Celtic Woman, Anuna, the Western Youth Orchestra, and has been successful in many competitions as a soloist and, of course, with 4 in a Bar!
Tristan Caldwell:
Tristan, affectionately known as 'T', or 'Mr. T' Is the tallest and lowest in the group (being the bass).
Can be spotted grazing frequently throughout the day, and when interrupted will have a joke at the ready!
Eoin Conway:
Eoin (tenor) is from Dublin and first joined a choir aged seven (prior to that, he specialised in the mimicry of household appliances). He is a graduate in Music from NUI Maynooth. Apart from 4 in a Bar, he sings with several other groups, including the Palestrina Choir of St Mary's Pro-Cathedral. He also works as an arranger and pianist.
In his spare time he enjoys reading, composing, cycling for miles in the rain, and writing about himself in the third person.
Paul McGough:
Paul (baritone) lives in the shadow of Mr. T and bears the brunt of his bad jokes. Paul attended St. Finian's College in his home town of Mullingar as well as Trinity College Dublin, and still laments the closure of the Buttery Bar there. A one-time globetrotter with Celtic Woman, he's now happier at home, singing with the National Chamber Choir of Ireland, Anúna, the choir of St. Patrick's Cathedral Dublin and Resurgam, Paul is also responsible for the management of 4 in a Bar.
