About 4 in a Bar:

4 in a Bar is Ireland's leading vocal harmony and barbershop quartet. The guys are proud member of IABS (Irish Association of Barbershop Singing) and have won Gold Medals for quartet singing in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

In 2009, they represented Ireland at European level competitions (Eindhoven) and again in 2015 at the Convention of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (Harrowgate).

Eoin and Tristan both come from north County Dublin, Shane from Limerick and Paul from Mullingar, but the guys all live and work in Dublin where they met each other on the singing scene. From this busy world of cathedral choirs, opera productions, movie soundtracks and recording studios, their passion for blended voices led them to search YouTube for new ideas, and they soon discovered the world of barbershop singing. Having ordered some sheet music online and signed up as members of IABS, the guys got together and the rest is history...

Repertoire-wise, 4 in a Bar covers every sort of style, even writing new songs when requested. Classical, spiritual, traditional, Irish, pop, rock - it's been done. Eoin is the group's main arranger, responsible for everything from radio jingles to more complex arrangements of pieces like The Scientist, No surprises, Can't take my eyes off you and others.
In 2011, the guys recorded and released their first album to a full house at the Workman's Club on Dublin's quays. Entitled 'Introducing: 4 in a Bar', the CD showcases a wide selection of barbershop music.
In August 2015, the quartet launched their new album– 'Hide & Seek' – with a lunchtime concert at the National Concert Hall, Dublin. It features quite a few of Eoin's arrangements for the group and was made Album of the Week on RTÉ Lyric FM, Ireland's national broadcaster of (primarily) Classical music.
Both albums are available to buy in Tower Records, Wicklow Street, Dublin or via download at our Media page and iTunes

In recent years, 4 in a Bar has been involved in an increasing number of high-profile activities. These include performing for the President of Ireland at Áras an Uachtaráin, singing for the 1916 Centenary Commemmoration events in 2016, various national and international TV coverage in commercials (companies like Meteor, Wimax internet, Guinness, etc), jingle recordings for RTÉ, Newstalk FM and other radio stations, international competitions and festival performances.
As a group or individually, the guys have performed or recorded with artists as renowned and diverse as Paul Brady, Anuna, Riverdance, Opera Theatre Company, The Corrs, Chanticleer, Chamber Choir Ireland, Celtic Woman, The Crash Ensemble, The Kronos Quartet and the RTE Concert Orchestra.

It is a priority for the guys to share the knowledge they have accumulated and to inspire and develop the next generation of harmony singers, and to achieve that they present classroom masterclasses in keeping with the principles of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Visiting schools and youth clubs where invited, the quartet brings a mix of fun and singing technique to young people in the hope they will continue the cost-free, healthy activity of ensemble singing.
Bursaries and support for these school visits are available through IABS.

Individual profiles:

Tristan Caldwell

Tristan - affectionately known as 'Mr. T' - is simultaneously the tallest and lowest in the group, being the bass.
He is originally from north County Dublin, where he can be spotted grazing frequently throughout the day. When he's not deep in rumbling conversation with the African plains at a long-distance, subsonic level, he is very approachable and will always have a terrible joke at the ready!

Eoin Conway

Eoin (tenor) is from Dublin and first joined a choir aged seven (prior to that, he specialised in the mimicry of household appliances). He is a graduate in Music from NUI Maynooth and has received critical acclaim on national radio for his cycling legs.
He sings with several other groups, most regularly the choir of Christchurch Cathedral. He also works as an arranger and pianist.

In his spare time he enjoys reading, composing, cycling for miles in the rain and writing about himself in the third person.

Shane Barriscale

Shane (lead) is from Limerick and as our melody man he loves being the centre of attention...
Shane began his professional career performing with a medieval vocal ensemble based in Bunratty Castle in County Clare, in full costume (including tight tights). Since then, he has performing with many groups and organisations including the Irish Youth Chamber Choir, Palestrina Cathedral Choir, New Dublin Voices, Sestina Early Music Ensemble, Tonnta Music, Northern Ireland Opera, Wide Open Opera, RTÉ Concert Orchestra Chorus, as well as having various appearances in Galway Arts Week, Summer Music on the Shannon and Tiger Dublin Fringe Festival.

In his free time Shane enjoys long walks on the beach, sunsets, candlelight dinners...oops, wrong website!

Paul McGough

Paul (baritone) is neither the highest voice, the melody nor the bass, and is therefore left with all the awkward notes nobody else wants to sing.
From Mullingar, he studied music at St. Finian's College and Trinity College Dublin. He has sung around the world with international Irish groups such as Anuna and Celtic Woman, and now he's at home with the choir of St. Patrick's Cathedral Dublin, Chamber Choir Ireland Crux Vocal Ensemble and Resurgam. Paul also looks after the day-to-day running of 4 in a Bar, chauffeuring the guys around and generally nagging to straighten their tie and stuff like that.

Paul is married to Natalia, likes to travel, also likes photography, video and web design, cooking, forgetting and burning fine meals and starting things he'll never quite fini...
